Turning on Secure POP

Summary: We are now requiring all connections to the OIT Mailbox Services accounts to be secured using standard options available in your email program. Using a secure connection helps protect your password and increases the security of your communications and your data. The following section will explain how to connect securely using POP.

These instructions are meant for those who have already set up POP for use with their UCI OIT Mailbox Services accounts. If you need instructions on setting up your mail program for the first time to use POP, please see the Email Set Up page.

We have tested current versions of the software listed below. If you have earlier versions of any of these programs, you may need to upgrade.

Eudora 7 for Windows

You will need to Eudora 6.2 or later, preferably Eudora 7. If you need to download a current version, visit the Licenses Database and login with your UCInetID and password.

Norton Anti-Virus Conflict

If you receive an error such as: "The server does not support a SSL connection ", or "The connection to the server has failed" it is likely due to use of a consumer version of Norton Antivirus configured to scan incoming mail. You will need to disable scanning incoming mail. If you use Norton Internet Security, it conflicts with our services. To use NACS' POP email server, you will need to uninstall Norton Internet Security. Call the Response Center at (949) 824-2222 for more information.

  1. Launch Eudora
  2. From the Tools menu, select Options...
  3. Select Getting Started from the list of icons on the left
  4. Check the box next to Allow authentication
  5. Select Checking Mail from the list of icons on the left
  6. Select Required, STARTTLS from the drop down list under Secure Sockets when Receiving
  7. Click OK

Outlook 2003 (XP) for Windows

Norton Anti-Virus Conflict

If you receive an error such as: "The server does not support a SSL connection ", or "The connection to the server has failed" it is likely due to use of a consumer version of Norton Antivirus configured to scan incoming mail. You will need to disable scanning incoming mail. If you use Norton Internet Security, it conflicts with our services. To use NACS' POP email server, you will need to uninstall Norton Internet Security. Call the Response Center at (949) 824-2222 for more information.

  1. Launch Outlook
  2. From the Tools menu, select E-Mail Accounts
  3. Select View or change existing email accounts, and click Next
  4. Select the email account and click Change
  5. Click on the More Settings button
  6. In the Internet E-Mail Settings window, click on the Advanced tab
  7. Under Incoming Server (POP3), check the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)
  8. Click OK to return to the E-mail Accounts window
  9. Click Next
  10. Click Finish

Outlook Express versions 5 and 6 and Outlook 2000 for Windows

  2. From the Tools menu, select Accounts
  3. Select the Mail tab, select your UCI email account and click on the Properties button
  4. In the Properties window, click on the Advanced tab
  5. Under Incoming mail (POP3), check the box next to This server requires a secure connection (SSL)
  6. Click OK

Thunderbird 1.5 for Windows

We have tested Secure POP with Thunderbird 1.5. Please upgrade your copy of Thunderbird to the latest version. Mozilla continues to update their email client to improve security features.

  1. Launch Thunderbird
  2. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings
  3. Click on Server Settings in the left pane
  4. Under Secure Settings click the SSL radio button. This will change the port to 995
  5. Click OK

Netscape 7.x for Windows

We have tested Secure POP with Netscape 7.x If you have an older version of Netscape and it does not work, please upgrade your version or use Thunderbird 1.5. Please note, Netscape 8 is a stand alone browser. You may want to use Thunderbird 1.5 instead. It is Mozilla's stand alone email software and is very similar to Netscape's mail.

  1. Launch Netscape 7.x
  2. From the Edit menu, select Mail & Newsgroup Settings
  3. Click the Server Settings category for your UCI email account in the left pane.
  4. Check the Use secure connection (SSL) box. Once this is checked, the port number at the top of the window should automatically change to 995.
  5. Do not check Use Secure Authentication
  6. Click OK to close to Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings

 

Eudora 6.23 for Macintosh

You will need to use Eudora 6.2x or later. If you need to download a current version, visit the Licenses Database and login with your UCInetID and password. If you need help upgrading, view our instructions and/or call the OIT Response Center.

  1. Launch Eudora
  2. From the Special menu, select Settings...
  3. In the left pane, scroll down to SSL.
  4. Select Required (TLS) from the SSL for POP menu
  5. Click OK

Microsoft Entourage 2004 for Macintosh

Earlier versions of Microsoft Entourage will not work with Secure POP. You will need to upgrade your version to Entourage 2004 (11.2.5) or choose another email application.

  1. Launch Entourage
  2. From the Tools menu, select Accounts
  3. In the Accounts window, select your UCI email account and click the Edit button
  4. Click on the Account Settings tab
  5. Under Receiving mail, click the Click here for advanced receiving options button
  6. Check the box next to This POP service requires a secure connection
  7. Click the OK
  8. Close the Accounts window.

Mail for Macintosh (OS X)

We have tested Mail for 0S 10.3 and 10.4. If you have an earlier version of the Macintosh Operating System, you may need to upgrade or choose another email application to check your OIT MailBox Services email.

  1. Launch Mail
  2. From the Mail menu, select Preferences
  3. Click the Accounts icon
  4. Select your UCI account
  5. Click on the Advanced tab
  6. Check the box next to SSL
  7. Choose Password from the Authentication drop down list
  8. Close the window
  9. Click the Save button to save your changes

Thunderbird 1.5 for Macintosh

We have tested Secure POP with Thunderbird 1.5. Please upgrade your copy of Thunderbird to the latest version. Mozilla continues to update their email client to improve security features.

  1. Launch Thunderbird
  2. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings
  3. Select Server Settings from the list of items on the left for your UCI account
  4. Under Security Settings, select the SSL radio button
  5. Do not check the Use secure authentication box
  6. Click the OK button

Netscape 7.2 or higher for Macintosh

We have tested Secure POP with Netscape 7.2. If you have an older version of Netscape and it does not work, please upgrade your version or use Thunderbird 1.5.

  1. Launch Netscape and go to Mail & Newsgroups
  2. In the left pane, you should see your email accounts. Click on the top level your UCI email
  3. In the right pane, click on View settings for this account under the Accounts heading
  4. Your Account settings should appear in a drop down menu. Click on Server Settings in the left pane. If you do not see this, click the triangle next to your UCI account
  5. Check the box next to Use secure connection (SSL). Do not check the Use Secure Authentication box
  6. Click the OK button
