Email: Authenticated SMTP for Macintosh

Summary: Configure your email software to use "Authenticated SMTP" to use your UCInetID and password to send mail.

Eudora version 6.x for the Macintosh

OS 9: If you are using Eudora and OS 9, you will need to turn ON your keychain for Authenticated SMTP to work.

For Mac OS 10.2 and later. (This will not work with 10.0 - 10.1)

On the Macintosh, Eudora version 6.x requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. While in Eudora, under the Special menu, select Settings.
  2. Click on the Sending Mail icon in the left category list.
  3. Confirm the UCI SMTP server, smtp.uci.edu
  4. Make sure Allow Authentication or Allow Authorization is checked.
  5. Click on the SSL icon near the bottom of the left category list.
  6. Make sure that SSL for SMTP is set to Required (TLS).
  7. Make sure that Standard Port SSL Negotiation is set to TLS 1.0 (Cyrus).
  8. Make sure that Alternate Port SSL Negotiation is set to Maximum Compatibility.

Note: SSL is supported for Mac OS Classic and Mac OS 10.2 or later, but not Mac OS 10.0 or 10.1.

Mac OS X Mail Application version 1.3 - 2.0 (OS 10.3 'Panther' and 10.4 'Tiger')

The Mac OS X Mail Application requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. From the Accounts section of Mail Preferences, select your UCI account.
  2. In the Account Information tab, click the Server Settings button.
  3. Type 587 in the Server port field.
  4. Check the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) box.
  5. Choose Password from the Authentication drop down menu.
  6. Type in your UCInetID in the User Name field.
  7. Type your UCInetID password in the Password field.
  8. Click the OK button.

Netscape 6 and 7 for Macintosh

On the Macintosh, Netscape 6 and 7 require the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. While in Netscape, under the Edit menu, select Mail & Newsgroup Account Settings.
  2. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the left list.
  3. Change Server Name to: smtp.uci.edu
  4. Change the Port: to 587
  5. Make sure that Use name and password is checked.
  6. Enter your UCInetID for the User Name.
  7. Make sure that under Use secure connection (SSL), Always is selected.
  8. Click OK.

Netscape Communicator 4.7 for Macintosh

On the Macintosh, Netscape Communicator 4.7 requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. While in Netscape Communicator, under the Edit menu, select Preferences.
  2. Select Mail Servers which is under Mail & Newsgroups in the left category list.
  3. Change the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server to: smtp.uci.edu
  4. Change the Port: to 587
  5. Make sure that Outgoing mail server user name is set to your UCInetID
  6. Under Use Secure Socket Layer (SSL) or TLS for outgoing messages select Always .
  7. Click OK.

Thunderbird 1.5

On the Macintosh, Thunderbird requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP:

  1. Launch Thunderbird.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Account Settings.
  3. Click on Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the left pane. Select smtp.uci.edu and click the Edit button.
  4. In the Settings window, change the Port to 587.
  5. Check the "Use name and password" box and enter your UCInetID in the User Name field.
  6. Click the TLS radio button under Use secure connection.
  7. Click OK.

Entourage 2004

On the Macintosh, Entourage 2004 requires the following changes to use authenticated SMTP. (Earlier versions of Entourage will not work.)

  1. Launch Entourage.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.
  3. In the Mail pane, select your UCI email account and click the Edit button at the top of the window.
  4. In the Account Settings pane, click the "Click here for advanced sending options" button under Sending Mail.
  5. Check the box next to SMTP service requires secure connection (SSL)
  6. Check the box next to Override default SMTP port and change the port to 587
  7. Check the box next to SMTP server requires authentication and Use same settings as receiving mail server.
  8. Click back in the main Edit Account window and click OK.
